Jerry DeWitt’s Thursday night talk was an absolute pleasure. It was exactly what I hoped I would hear. It was sincere, heartfelt, funny and unpretentious.
In the midst of what sometimes feels like a sparsely populated community of unbelievers, Jerry’s talk seemed the rarest of gems. It’s courageous to embrace one’s true identity, let alone share it publicly. Listening to Jerry tell his story, I felt an easy affinity with him. I recommend hearing from him to everyone.

Right now, it seems hard for me to find a middle ground with respect to vocalizing about Humanism and attracting anyone to Humanism as an alternative lifestance and philosophy to organized religious dogma.
Why do I feel any need to consider a middle ground for discussion of and attraction to Humanism?
First, the current wave of atheistic publicity may be well served by a concurrent Humanist message that appeals to questioning Christians and followers of other religious dogmas, because of a gentle rather than demeaning approach to embracing Humanism.
Second, there’s a sound argument for eliminating the unrecognized harm done in adhering to Christian dogma, by abandoning the Christian dogma in favor of Humanism. The unrecognized harm is done when Christians choose to believe that the world as we know it will end in accordance with biblical prophesy and humans may do nothing to change, for the better, that end. Some Christian dogmatists may prefer to speed up that end, to enjoy sooner their just rewards in heaven.
My social intuition tells me that some folks in our neck of the woods respond better to a reasoned, gentle approach to learning the virtues of Humanism and learning the unrecognized harm of religious dogma. It also tells me that in some ways a generation gap exists between how young adults and older adults effectively communicate their passions.
Both young and old will use similar communication tactics, to positive and negative effect, but I most appreciate a communication style that is honest and respectful, if not reasoned and gentle. Plotting a middle-grounded, honest, respectful, reasoned and gentle approach to discussing and attracting folks to Humanism will prove a personal challenge for me moving forward.

Jerry DeWitt, Executive Director of Recovering From Religion
Dubbed the “rising star” of the freethought movement, Jerry has agreed to give a talk on his journey from lifelong evangelical preacher to atheist, along with the impacts and logistics of letting go of faith for someone who’s entire life was built on a supernatural belief.
The talk is FREE but we will take up a “free-will” donation for him at the talk as he was fired in December from his government job for being an atheist. Suggested donation is $10 of which 100% goes directly to help Jerry and his family.
February 16th
7:00pm to 9:00pm
Southwest Branch Amarillo Public Library
Presented by Panhandle Humanists and Freethought Oasis.
